The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) on the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) has launched a programme to curb accidents throughout the nation. The programme, below the aegis of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, prioritises excessive accident-burden zones in 100 districts by an evaluation of knowledge of accidents in 17 States. Launched in Delhi on Tuesday, the data-driven hyperlocal intervention strategy is tailor-made to the native wants of every district and aligned with the CoERS’s 5E mannequin of street security – engineering, enforcement, schooling, emergency care, and empathy. The MoRTH’s “Road Accidents in India 2022” report states 4,61,312 accidents have been reported, leading to 1,68,491 fatalities and 4,43,366 accidents. While many of those accidents have been attributed to human error, a big proportion is because of localised challenges.
