The Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC) has accepted the Waqf draft report with 14 votes against 11. The Opposition members have been asked to submit their dissent notes by 4:00 pm today (January 29). The Waqf meeting has ended in the national capital on Wednesday.
Asaduddin Owaisi on Waqf Amendment BillÂ
On the meeting of JPC on Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said,” We received the 655-page report last night. It is humanly impossible to read a 655-page report overnight. I have given a dissent report against the amendments which are not in favour of the Waqf Board. I will also oppose this Bill in Parliament.”
On the meeting of JPC on Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, Congress MP Dr Syed Naseer Hussain said, “Many objections and suggestions were made which have not been included in this report. The government has made the report as per them. Unconstitutional amendments have been brought and the rights of minorities have been harmed. The amendments have been brought to single out the minorities, especially the Muslim community.”
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya emphasized that the government intended to bring modernity, transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties and to also prevent the abuse of the law by vested interests who were trying to encroach upon lands at the cost of social and communal harmony in the country.
“Both of these objectives have been met with the amendments that have been passed and the report that has finally been accepted by the JPC. Though the discussions were heated, the final report is a fine document that empowers the Muslim community by bringing in much-needed accountability and transparency in the dealing of the Waqf Board,” Surya said.
Waqf committee to adopt its recommendations, revised bill: Jagdambika Pal
The chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament scrutinising the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Jagdambika Pal, has said the panel’s draft report and the amended version of the proposed law will be adopted at its meeting on Wednesday.
He made the remarks to the media as he chaired what is likely the last meeting of the committee.
Opposition members to give ‘dissent note’
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant said all opposition members will give their dissent. Pal is likely to submit the amended version of the proposed law to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday.
Ahead of the meeting, several opposition MPs met to discuss their agenda as many of them are preparing their dissent against the committee’s recommendations. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on August 8, 2024 following its introduction in the Lok Sabha by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
The bill aims to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, to address issues and challenges in regulating and managing waqf properties.
