Kozhikode-based experimental theatre group Aniyara, which is celebrating its golden jubilee, is observing World Theatre Day with a seminar on contemporary theatre as well as the staging of three micro plays. The event will be held at the Kozhikode town hall at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday.
Sreejith Ramanan, director of John Matthai Centre, Thrissur, will be the resource person for the seminar.
Aniyara was founded by theatre enthusiasts K.R. Mohandas, Paul Kallanode, Jayaprakash Karyal, Murali Menon, and the late T. Sudhakaran. Micro plays are a novel concept being introduced by Aniyara on its golden jubilee to make theatre productions more affordable. These plays that do not exceed 15 minutes in duration are distinct from skits with their genre being serious and socially relevant themes.
Three micro plays will be staged on Thursday. “Athmam” written by Paul Kallanode is about the quest of the self through the vagaries of life to find meaning to creation. “Akasmikavadhikku Orapeksha” deals with one’s inner conflict when one has to lose to gain something in life. The play “Lift” is about the relevance of time as a compelling transformer and what happens to those who are unable to keep pace.
Aniyara has staged several ground-breaking plays such as “Vetta” and “Bharathavakyam” written by G. Sankara Pillai, “Thazhvara” by Paul Kallanode, “Innedath Innavan”, “Kanalattam”, and “Perumara” by the late P.M. Taj, “Namamathram Asokan” by Jayaprakash Kuloor, and “Prasavikkatha Amma” by the late Thikkodiyan.
