The southwest monsoon arrived in Maharashtra on Sunday (May 25, 2025), making it the earliest onset of the annual rainfall season over the state in 35 years, the India Meteorological Department stated.
The southwest monsoon is anticipated to advance to Mumbai and another components over the following three days, the IMD added.
In 1990, southwest monsoon made onset over Maharashtra on May 20, IMD scientist Sushma Nair stated.
The monsoon superior into some extra components of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, complete Goa, components of Maharashtra, north Bay of Bengal, and components of Mizoram, components of Manipur and Nagaland on Sunday, the IMD stated.

The southwest monsoon hit Kerala on Saturday, marking its earliest arrival over the Indian mainland since 2009 when it had reached the southern state on May 23.
Normally, the southwest monsoon marks its onset over Kerala by June 1 and covers the whole nation by July 8. It begins retreating from northwest India round September 17 and withdraws fully by October 15.
It normally reaches Maharashtra round June 7 and Mumbai on June 11.
M Rajeevan, a monsoon skilled and former secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, stated early onset and masking a big space on the primary day is just not unusual.
