Parbhani violence: Aspiring lawyer dies in judicial custody-OxBig News Network

In the aftermath of Parbhani violence, a 35-year-old man identified as Somnath Suryawanshi allegedly died in judicial custody on Sunday (Monday 15, 2024).

Somnath was detained after violence triggered in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district following the desecration of a Constitution replica. He was one among the 50 persons that Parbhani police arrested between December 11 and December 12. His brother Premnatha Suryawanshi said, “He came a few days back to Parbhani to appear for the upcoming law examination.”

His brother mentioned that a bail application was applied in Court after he was sent to judicial custody. He had nothing to do with the protest of December 11 and picked up other men from his slum, as per his lawyer Pawan Jondhale.

Somnath is a resident of Pune and belongs to a nomadic tribe — the Wadar community. While police claimed of moved to a local hospital after he mentioned chest pain, local activists pointed out the arrested persons were manhandled by police.
