President, PM lead country’s celebration on Sunita’s return-OxBig News Network

Cutting across party lines, leaders on Wednesday welcomed the safe return of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her fellow Crew-9 members to Earth after an extended mission aboard the International Space Station.

Congratulatory messages poured in from top Indian leaders on X, with “perseverance” emerging as a key theme. Many hailed Sunita as an “inspiration” for her resilience and achievements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Williams and her Crew-9 teammates for exemplifying true perseverance. “Theirs has been a test of grit, courage and the boundless human spirit. Sunita and the Crew-9 astronauts have once again shown us what perseverance truly means. Their unwavering determination in the face of the vast unknown will forever inspire millions,” he wrote on X.

Highlighting the spirit of space exploration, Modi added, “It is about pushing the limits of human potential, daring to dream, and having the courage to turn those dreams into reality. Sunita, a trailblazer and an icon, has exemplified this spirit throughout her career.” He also lauded those who ensured the crew’s safe return, saying they demonstrated the power of precision, passion and technology.

President Droupadi Murmu echoed similar sentiments, calling Sunita “India’s daughter.” She commended the astronauts’ perseverance, dedication and never-say-die spirit. “Their historic journey is a tale of determination, teamwork and extraordinary courage. I salute their unwavering resolve and wish them excellent health!” Murmu wrote on X.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge lauded Sunita as a role model for space enthusiasts. “Your remarkable resilience and outstanding commitment serve as a profound inspiration to space enthusiasts worldwide and are a testament to human accomplishments,” he posted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and NCP (Shinde) MP Praful Patel were among other leaders who applauded Sunitaon her return.

Meanwhile, celebrations erupted in Jhulasan, the ancestral village of Sunita’s’ family in Gujarat’s Mehsana district. Residents illuminated the village, burst firecrackers, distributed sweets, danced and offered prayers to the local deity in honour of her safe return.
