Rohingya refugees, Bangladeshi nationals detained in police crackdown in Jaipur-OxBig News Network

A massive police crackdown on illegal immigrants and suspected criminals in Jaipur has led to the detention of about 500 persons, including 394 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar and several alleged Bangladeshi nationals. Those detained were being interrogated for confirmation of their credentials.

Seventeen cases under Section 170 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (arrest to prevent the commission of cognisable offences) were registered against the Rohingya refugees detained in Jaipur South district’s police station areas on Monday, January 28, 2025. The people rounded up by the police reportedly included some hardcore criminals as well.

Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said the operation was aimed at identifying the foreign nationals living illegally in the State capital and stopping the criminal activities. “The information about the nationality of individuals was being obtained after questioning the suspects,” he said.

Though the police have found the Rohingya refugees in possession of the cards and identity documents issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the matter was being investigated with a suspicion that these cards could be fake.

One individual alleged to be a Bangladeshi national, Fazar Ali (45), was detained from Sanganer in Jaipur South district, while the individuals detained in Jaipur North district also included some alleged Bangladeshi nationals.

According to the police sources, strict vigil would be kept on the foreign nationals living illegally in the city after the crackdown and the action would continue in future as well. A special team of Jaipur police had in October 2024 arrested 12 Bangladeshi nationals living here by allegedly using forged documents.
