A section of lawyers in Sambhal on Monday (March 24, 2025) staged a pen-down protest against the arrest of the Shahi Jama Masjid committee president and senior lawyer Zafar Ali in connection with the November 24 violence.
The advocates group which held protests in all courts under the Sambhal district alleged that the arrest was an attempt to prevent him from testifying before a judicial commission investigating the incident.
“Various courts under Sambhal district like Chandousi, Gunnaur, and Sambhal remained closed today as part of the strike. There was no FIR against him, yet he was sent to jail under unspecified charges. This is a wrongful act by the police,” said Mohammad Nazar Qureshi, president of the Chandousi Court Bar Association in Sambhal.
Advocates also raised slogans against Zafar Ali’s arrest.
Amid the tension, the police conducted a flag march in some parts of Sambhal. In the areas around the Shahi Jama Masjid and Mr. Ali’s home, police personnel including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and Rapid Action Force (RAF) remained present on Monday (March 24, 2025), to control any protest.
Incendiary role
Mr. Ali, himself an advocate and the president of the managing committee of Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, was arrested on March 23 in connection with the violence, with police claiming they had gathered evidence that he played an incendiary role during the violence last year. “We gathered evidence that he played an incendiary role during the violence last year,” said Krishna Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sambhal.
Mr. Ali has been at the forefront of the dispute and had alleged during a press conference after the November 24 violence that those who died had fallen victim to police firing.
Sambhal, a town in western Uttar Pradesh, witnessed violence on November 24, the second day of the Shahi Jama Masjid survey after a local court ordered it. People gathered near the mosque clashed with Uttar Pradesh Police personnel, leading to heavy stone pelting and allegations that the cops opened fire. The Uttar Pradesh Police claimed they only used ‘mild force’ to control the situation.
Five people died and several others were injured in the clashes. Uttar Pradesh police denied charges that it fired at the protesters.
