The State government has accorded administrative sanction for the widening of three hairpin curves on the Thamarassery Ghat Road at a cost of ₹37.16 crore. The fund for the much-awaited project was sanctioned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways based on a proposal submitted by the Public Works department (National Highways).

The widening works will cover hairpin curves 6, 7, and 8 with paved shoulders to support the structure and facilitate the movement of pedestrians. Guidelines set by the Indian Road Congress, an apex body of highway engineers, will be followed for the flawless execution of the project on the mountain pass.

There will be a five-year defect liability period to assure quality work. The PWD has been entrusted with the floating of tenders and awarding the project to a competent agency. Traffic regulations will be in place on the ghat road during the widening works.

Minister for Public Works and Tourism P.A. Mohamed Riyas said here on Thursday that the tendering procedures would begin soon to complete the widening works at the earliest. He added the snarl-up on the inter-district route could be brought down to a great extent with the widening of the selected stretches.
