At least six people died, and six others sustained injuries in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, after an uprooted tree fell on commuters near the popular gurdwara in Manikaran, an official said on Sunday.
The incident occurred at about 4.15 p.m. on the road opposite the Manikaran Sahib gurdwara in Kullu. Three men and three women were killed.
“Six people died after a tree, which was on the cliff, fell on the people who were walking or standing on the road below. Along with the uprooted tree, debris also fell from the hill,” Vikas Shukla, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Kullu told The Hindu.
The district administration had shifted the six injured persons to a hospital at Jari for medical treatment, and rescue and relief operations were underway, Mr. Shukla said.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the demise of the six persons, and directed the district administration to extend all possible assistance to the victims and their families. He also instructed officers to ensure the best medical treatment for the injured.
