As severe air pollution choked the national capital, Punjab on Monday reported 1,250 cases of stubble burning. This marks the season’s highest stubble-burning count in a single day.  With this, the total count of stubble burning cases reached 9,655 in the state.

The stubble burning has been one of the most prominent causes of air pollution in the national capital. On November 6, the Central govt doubled the fine for farmers burning crop residue to deter them. The penalties increased to Rs 30,000 for those with more than five acres of land. Farmers with less than two acres of land will now have to pay environmental compensation of Rs 5,000, up from Rs 2,500.
