India TV’s ‘She’ Conclave: Swati Maliwal, known for her advocacy on women’s safety, shared insights from her experiences and emphasised the need for stronger policies to protect and uplift women across the country.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal was a special guest at India TV’s ‘She’ Conclave, where she spoke on women’s empowerment and shared her personal experiences as an activist and leader. Speaking at the conclave, Maliwal recalled her journey, saying she felt a strong urge to work for the country in 2006. She volunteered for several years with Parivartan NGO and later became a core committee member of the Anna Hazare movement. In 2015, she was appointed chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), which she led like a movement.
‘I cannot tolerate injustice anywhere’
Maliwal emphasised her unwavering commitment to activism. “I was an activist and will always remain one. I cannot tolerate injustice anywhere. Doing good work often comes with challenges,” she said, highlighting that under her leadership, DCW handled over 1.74 lakh cases in eight years.
‘Rapists of young girls should be hanged’
Reflecting on her tenure at DCW, Maliwal revealed that the women’s helpline received nearly 4,000 calls daily, and the team took immediate action. “We rescued over 2,500 women, including a 14-year-old girl from Model Town. Rapists of young girls should be given the death penalty,” she asserted.
Demand for stricter laws and social change
Maliwal recalled her hunger strike, after which the central government accepted her demands for stronger laws against sexual crimes. However, she pointed out that crimes against women persist despite stricter laws. “I was part of the Nirbhaya movement and faced lathi charges, but the entire nation must stand with women. Even with strict laws, fear among criminals is lacking,” she said.
‘Women deserve equal rights and representation’
Maliwal also addressed societal biases against women. “A woman’s first test begins when she files a complaint. Society questions the victim rather than the perpetrator. Women must raise their voices against injustice, and if a woman is wrong, action should be taken against her too. Women deserve their rightful place in society, and their representation in Parliament must increase,” she asserted.
Maliwal’s speech at the conclave reinforced the urgent need for stronger laws, societal change, and increased political participation of women to ensure true empowerment.
