Madurai City police has virtually brought Thiruparankundram hillock and all roads leading to Subramaniya Swamy temple in Madurai district under a thick blanket of security cover on Tuesday (February 4, 2025) in view of a massive protest call given by the Hindu Munnani.
Over 2,500 policemen have been deployed in Thirupparankundram.
Earlier, Hindu Munnani had called for the demonstration protesting against a section of Muslims reportedly for attempting to rename Thirupparankundram hillock as Sikkandar Malai.
Despite the police cordoning off all the roads and streets around the temple with barricades at various points, around 20 persons who managed to reach the 16-pillar mandapam were picked up by the police.
However, devotees, who trickled in small numbers, were allowed to offer darshan at Subramaniya Swamy temple after verification.
But, entry to the hillock, where Sikkandar Dargah and Kasivishwanathar temple are located was banned by the police for a day as a precautionary measure, said Commissioner of Police, J. Loganathan.
Most of the shops and marriage halls around the temple remained closed as the district administration had clamped prohibitory order in the city for two days since Monday.
