Emphasizing the urgent need for institutional reforms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that in an era where technology evolves every week, it is unacceptable for global institutions to remain unchanged for eighty years, adding that “twentieth-century typewriters cannot run twenty-first-century software.”
Addressing the global leaders at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro PM Modi said, “In the age of AI, where technology is updated every week, it is not acceptable for a global institution not to be updated even once in eighty years. Twentieth-century typewriters cannot run twenty-first-century software. “
Prime Minister Modi said that the world needs a new, multipolar and inclusive order, which requires comprehensive and effective reform of global institutions and not just symbolic steps.
“Today, the world needs a new, multipolar, and inclusive world order. It will have to start with comprehensive reforms in global institutions. Reforms should not be merely symbolic, but their real impact should also be visible,” ANI quoted PM Modi as saying.
PM Modi pointed out that the expansion and recent inclusion of new members demonstrate BRICS’s ability to adapt to global changes and urged that the same spirit be applied to reforms in the UN Security Council, WTO, and Multilateral Development Banks.
“The expansion of BRICS and the joining of new friends is proof that BRICS is an organisation that can change itself according to the times. Now, we will have to show the same willpower for reforms in institutions like the UN Security Council, WTO and Multilateral Development Banks,” ANI quoted PM Modi as saying.
BRICS, originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, will be expanded in 2024 by adding Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates as new members.
Prime Minister Modi said that two-thirds of humanity is not adequately represented in global institutions and is not given a place at the decision-making table, raising questions about the credibility and effectiveness of these institutions.
“Two-thirds of humanity has not been adequately represented in the global institutions formed in the 20th century. Countries that have a major contribution to today’s global economy have not been given a place at the decision-making table. This is not just a question of representation but also a question of credibility and effectiveness. Without the Global South, these institutions seem like a mobile with a SIM card but no network,” ANI quoted PM Modi as saying.
Prime Minister Modi reached Brazil earlier today as part of the fourth stop on his five-country tour, following the conclusion of a landmark visit to Argentina on Saturday.
