A consensus has been reportedly reached between University of Calicut Vice-Chancellor (V-C) P. Raveendran and pro-Left members over amicably holding meetings of the Syndicate.
The pro-Left members spoke to Mr. Raveendran ahead of the Syndicate meeting scheduled on Monday morning (December 30). This was against the backdrop of the Syndicate meeting on December 19 and a Senate meeting on December 18 ending up in chaos because of the differences of opinion that emerged between them and Mr. Raveendran.
It is learnt that the members and the V-C came to an understanding that the latter would directly inform them of his legal disagreements, if there are any, over any of the topics proposed to be included by them on the Syndicate’s agenda. The Syndicate and Senate meetings had remained inconclusive after Mr. Raveendran objected to a resolution proposed by the pro-Left members related to the transfer of two section officers. Heated arguments had occurred between the pro-Left members and those aligned with the United Democratic Front (UDF).
P.K. Khaleemudheen, L.J. Lijeesh, and M.B. Faisal of the CPI(M), T.J. Martin of the Congress, P. Rasheed Ahammed of the Indian Union Muslim League, and A.K. Anuraj of the BJP attended the discussions with Mr. Raveendran.
Later, the Syndicate meeting passed the draft Budget proposals for 2025-26 and the revised Budget estimate for 2024-25. The proposal to launch online courses under the School of Distance Education was cleared along with the guidelines to hold paper-free meetings of the Syndicate and the Senate. Five acres would be given away to set up a skill park on the university campus. A sum of ₹10 lakh was sanctioned for the activities of the departmental students’ union. Equivalency certificates issued by any university in the State would be enough for the appointment of teachers in aided colleges affiliated to the university.
