YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy greeting people during his visit to Bangarupalem in Chittoor district on Wednesday.
What was planned to be a ‘face-to-face’ interaction with the mango farmers turned into a political show on Wednesday when the visit of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to Bangarupalem triggered unruly scenes, mob frenzy, and altercation between the police and cadres, besides paralysing traffic on the busy Chittoor-Bengaluru National Highway.
Police curbs ignored
Mr, Jagan Mohan Reddy arrived at the helipad on the outskirts of Bangarupalem from Bengaluru at 11 a.m. His convoy moved at a snail’s pace for more than a couple of hours to reach the agriculture market yard located a few km away with the party cadres pouring in from Chittoor, Annamayya, and Tirupati districts, ignoring the police restrictions limiting the participation to 30 leaders at the helipad and 500 farmers at the market yard.
Despite 12 police checkposts and a ban on roadshows, the YSRCP cadres descended on the National Highway and choked the rural roads up to a radius of 20 km from Bangarupalem.
Several cadres walked for over five to seven km to defy the blockade, and Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy frequently stopped his vehicle to greet the crowd.
Tension prevailed when a group of party cadres surged towards the former Chief Minister’s convoy, prompting the police to resort to a mild lathi-charge.
A youth wing leader received a bleeding head injury when he reportedly fell in the melee. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy made a bid to step out of the vehicle reportedly to assist the injured activist, but was firmly stopped by Superintendent of Police V.N. Manikantha Chandolu, who asked the YSRCP chief to stay inside the vehicle for his own safety.
At the venue, thousands of cadres thronged the market yard, making Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s speech inaudible.
At one stage, there was utter chaos when an activist grabbed Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s shirt pleading for a selfie and a handshake. For several minutes, the former Chief Minister found himself surrounded by unruly mob.
Meanwhile, the YSRCP cadres alleged that the police had stopped the vehicles of party leaders P. Ramachandra Reddy, Bhumana Karunakar Reddy, and R.K. Roja from reaching Bangarupalem.
