Former England captain and Delhi Capitals mentor Kevin Pietersen has backed young all-rounder Vipraj Nigam to make his mark at the highest level sooner rather than later. Pietersen heaped praise on Vipraj’s work ethic while also lauding the Delhi Capitals scouting team for identifying the youngster and giving him an opportunity in IPL 2025.
Pietersen’s remarks came after Vipraj stole the show with the ball in Delhi Capitals’ six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru, claiming two wickets-including that of Virat Kohli-while conceding just 18 runs in his four-over spell.
Vipraj, a crafty leg-spinner who can also clear the ropes with the bat, was signed by Delhi Capitals for ?50 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction. The 20-year-old first caught attention during the inaugural edition of the Uttar Pradesh T20 League, where he picked up 20 wickets in 11 matches at an impressive economy rate of under 7.5 runs per over. His performances in the UP T20 League earned him a call-up to the state side for the 2024-25 domestic season.
The promising leg-spinner made his debut for Delhi Capitals in the opening match of IPL 2025, making an immediate impact by smashing a quickfire 39 off just 15 balls and picking up a wicket. Vipraj’s bowling has continued to shine, with the youngster taking two wickets apiece in his last two outings-against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai and RCB in Bengaluru.
“Vippi has the work ethic to be a genuine household name in Indian cricket! He works so hard and so well. Impressive young man, and kudos to the DC scouts!” Pietersen wrote in a post on X, alongside a video showcasing the 20-year-old’s training routine.
During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, Vipraj emerged as a standout performer, claiming eight wickets at an economy rate of just over seven. Though primarily a bowler, he also underlined his power-hitting prowess by smashing 27 off eight balls in a successful chase of 157, alongside Rinku Singh, against Andhra.
Pietersen has proven to be a valuable addition to the Delhi Capitals’ backroom staff, working closely with new head coach Hemang Badani. Both have been hands-on as the Capitals have kicked off their campaign with a franchise-record winning streak of four consecutive matches.
Delhi Capitals currently sit atop the IPL 2025 table with four wins from four matches and are the only unbeaten side so far this season.
