Mumbai Indians complicated their chances of qualification to the Indian Premier League playoffs after losing to Gujarat Titans on Tuesday, May 6. In a rain-curtailed match, MI lost on the final ball after Gujarat chased down 147 runs from 19 overs with three wickets in hand.

With seven teams still in the playoffs race, it is increasingly looking like 16 points will not be safe enough to make it to the top 4 this season. Mumbai have 14 points from 12 matches, and desperately need to win the final 2 games to ensure a position in the final 4 this season.

Speaking on the same at the post-match press conference, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene said that the team will treat every single match as a playoffs from now on as they look to maintain their tremendous second-half run in the tournament.

Mumbai Indians showed exceptional resilience to stay in the playoffs race despite losing four out of their first five matches this season. MI were on a sensational 6-game winning haul, which was brought to a halt by the barest of margins on Tuesday.

“Both teams made quite a few mistakes all day in the middle and we probably made more than they did. I think that’s the difference. I think we didn’t play our best, especially with the bat. I thought we were set up nicely [initially] and then, we just had to bat those last eight overs, which we didn’t bat smartly,” Jayawardene analysed the game at the post-match press conference.

“We’re probably 30 runs short on that wicket The guys bowled really well and created a lot of opportunities. So, I think that’s a good sign and we treat every game as a playoff game from here on. I’m very proud of the boys today, the way they fought back from that situation,” he added.

Mumbai Indians play Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in their final 2 matches of the season. They will bank on their top performers – Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah – to qualify for the top 4.
