Jaideep Ahlawat, Saif Ali Khan in ‘Jewel Thief’

The trailer for Jewel Thief, a glossy, big-ticket heist adventure starring Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat, was launched in Mumbai on Monday (April 14). Produced by Siddharth Anand, the film is set to premiere on Netflix on April 25. 

Saif, 54, attended the trailer launch with his fellow cast members Ahlawat, Kunal Kapoor and Nikita Dutta. They were joined by Netflix Originals Director Ruchikaa Kapoor and the film’s two directors: Kookie Gulati and Robbie Garewal.

In Jewel Thief, Saif plays Rehan Roy, a savvy, globe-trotting diamond thief of Ocean-ic charm and infamy. He’s brought in by Mumbai crime boss Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat) to steal the Red Sun, ‘Africa’s most expensive diamond’, valued at Rs. 500 crore. A deal is cut (50-50, fair and square), but, true to the rules of the genre, Rehan is double-crossed. Or is it the other way around? Locations and loyalties shift as a high-stakes game ensues.

Joining the chase is Kunal Kapoor as Vikram Patel, a cop determined to catch Rohan red-handed (get it?), and Nikita Dutta as Farah, Rehan’s love interest. 

Speaking about the film, Saif Ali Khan said at the trailer launch, “What I like about a heist movie is that although the guy does something technically wrong – he breaks the law – he does it for a good reason, usually to help someone in his family. It is an honorable theft. People also enjoy such characters as they fulfill the fantasy of taking on the system.” 

Saif had starred in the first two Race movies, imprints of which can be felt in Jewel Thief. The film marks his return to Netflix after the epic crime-drama series Sacred Games.
