Kangana Ranaut’s Rs 1 lakh electricity bill row: Himachal power board refutes claim, shares full breakdown, accuses her of delayed payments | Hindi Movie News

Kangana Ranaut stirred a political debate after alleging at a public rally that she had received an electricity bill of Rs 1 lakh for her house in Manali, which she claimed has been lying unused. However, the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board has now responded to her claim, offering a breakdown of the charges and accusing the actor of delayed payments.
Speaking at a gathering in Mandi on Tuesday, Kangana remarked, “In Himachal Pradesh, the (ruling) Congress has created such a miserable situation. This month, I received an electricity bill of Rs 1 lakh for my house in Manali, where I don’t even stay! Just imagine the conditions here.” The video of her address has gained widespread traction online.
Electricity board says bill was Rs 90,384 for two months, with pending arrears
In response, the state electricity board clarified that the total amount billed was actually Rs 90,384 — not for a single month, but covering a span of over two months, which included pending dues from earlier billing cycles.
Sandeep Kumar, Managing Director of the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board, stated that the claims were misleading. “BJP MP Kangana Ranaut raised an issue that the electricity board has asked her to pay the electricity bill of Rs 1 lakh of her house. The bill is almost Rs 91,000,” he told ANI, adding that the bill included charges for January, February, and part of March. “The bill for the months of November-December was paid on 16th January and after that she did not pay the bill.”
Power official says Ranaut has a history of delayed payments, received subsidy too
Kumar also highlighted a consistent pattern in Ranaut’s payment history. “Kangana Ranaut has consistently been making delayed payments of her monthly electricity bills. The bills for January and February were paid on March 28, 2025, with a combined consumption of 14,000 units and a fine.”
According to the board, her home’s high power consumption is a key factor behind the bill amount. Her property has a connected load of 94.82 kilowatts — significantly higher than an average household. “Her monthly electricity consumption averages between 5,000 and 9,000 units, which is significantly high,” Kumar noted.

Interestingly, despite the public outcry, the board confirmed that Ranaut benefits from the state’s power subsidy scheme. “Even Kangana Ranaut has been availing herself of the government subsidy on electricity bills regularly. In fact, she received a subsidy of Rs 700 on her February bill under the state government’s electricity subsidy scheme, which many people voluntarily choose to forgo.”

Kumar further clarified that no representative from Ranaut’s side contacted the board prior to her public remarks. The board emphasized that timely payments could have kept the amount much lower, adding, “Had she paid the bill on time, the amount would have been significantly lower.”
