‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has found its new director. Maggie Betts, known for The Burial, has officially taken over the project, bringing fresh momentum to the highly anticipated film.

Betts will also co-write the script alongside Liz Tigelaar. The film is being produced by Liza Chasin for 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn for Circle Management + Production. Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author of the bestselling novel, will serve as an executive producer alongside Margaret Chernin.
The 2017 novel, which spent 120 weeks on The New York Times Bestseller Paperback list, has become a pop culture phenomenon, particularly gaining traction on TikTok. The story follows Evelyn Hugo, a reclusive Hollywood icon, as she grants a rare interview to an aspiring journalist. Through their conversation, she reveals the secrets behind her seven marriages, unraveling a web of scandal, betrayal, and hidden truths.
Betts steps in after Leslye Headland, who was previously attached to direct, confirmed her departure from the project at the Sundance Film Festival. Netflix had reportedly been eyeing Betts for some time, given her success with The Burial, which starred Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones.
