The major indices are closing the day with gains to start the new trading week. However shares are closing near the middle of their up and down trading range.

At the end of the day,:

• Dow industrial average rose 312.0 points or 0.78% at 40524.79
• S&P index +42.61 points or 0.79% at 5405.97.
• NASDAQ index +107.03 points or 0.64% at 16831.48.
• Russell 2000+20.67 points or 1.11% at 1880.87.

Although the indices moved to the upside, there was some weakness within some of the benchmark’s for certain industries:

• Amazon fell -1.48%
• Broadcom fell -1.97%
• Nvidia fell -0.20%
• Meta fell -2.2%
• Microsoft fell -0.16%

Not the good breadth that you might expect with a solid stock market.

European shares meanwhile, had a better day:

• German DAX, +2.85%
• France’s CAC +2.37%
• UK’s FTSE 100 +2.14%
• Spain’s Ibex +2.64%
• Italy’s FTSE MIB +2.80%
