Mandhur Bhandakar’s ‘Chandni Bar’ sequel is in the works, director Sudipto Sen acquires the rights | Hindi Movie News

The 2001 film ‘Chandni Bar’ is making a comeback! The National Award-winning film, which showcased Tabu’s stellar performance and delved into the dark world of Mumbai’s bar dancers, has found a new home. Filmmaker Sudipto Sen, known for ‘The Kerala Story’, has acquired the rights to Madhur Bhandarkar’s flick, and excitingly, a sequel might be announced.
During an interview with Vicky Lalwani, it was stated that the discussions about the project are still ongoing. Sudipto Sen mentioned that he is in talks with the film’s co-producer, R Mohan, but can share details only next week as some legal formalities are yet to be finalized.
Sudipto has shown an interest in making ‘Chandni Bar 2‘ a reality. Additionally, reports indicate that the deal was finalized for around ₹1.75 crore.
Earlier, there was speculation that Mohan Azaad, the dialogue and screenplay writer of ‘Chandni Bar’, would direct the sequel. However, with Sudipto Sen now involved, the key question remains, will he helm the project himself, or will Madhur Bhandarkar return as the director? And most importantly, will Tabu reprise her iconic role?

Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Chandni Bar’ was a gripping crime drama that exposed the harsh realities of Mumbai’s underbelly, exploring themes of prostitution, dance bars, and gang violence. Led by Tabu and Atul Kulkarni, the film also featured Ananya Khare, Rajpal Yadav, Minakshi Sahani, and Vishal Thakkar in key roles. A commercial success, it was widely praised for its raw storytelling and powerful performances. At the 49th National Film Awards, ‘Chandni Bar’ won four major honors, including Best Film on Other Social Issues, Best Actress for Tabu, Best Supporting Actor for Kulkarni, and Best Supporting Actress for Khare.
Moreover, ‘Chandni Bar’ was made on a budget of ₹1.5 crore and earned ₹6.6 crore at the box office.
