Manmohan Singh turns 92; PM Modi, Kharge, Rahul extend wishes




Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led greetings on the occasion of his immediate predecessor Manmohan Singh’s 92nd birthday.

“Birthday greetings to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. I pray that he is blessed with a long and healthy life,” Modi said on X.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge extended his wishes to the former prime minister.

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in his post said, “Happy Birthday to Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Your humility, wisdom, and selfless service in shaping our country’s future continue to inspire me and millions of Indians. Wishing you good health and happiness always!”

Born in Gah, West Punjab, Pakistan on September 26, 1932, Singh studied at Panjab University, Chandigarh, and University of Cambridge.

He went on to earn a doctorate in economics from University of Oxford. Starting out as an economic advisor to Government of India, Singh went on to steer the RBI.

He became a Rajya Sabha member in 1991 and contested and lost his first Lok Sabha election in 1999.

When the Congress-led UPA came to power in 2004, then coalition chief Sonia Gandhi declined the PM’s post recommending Manmohan Singh who went on to head the alliance till 2014 when Modi-led BJP trounced the Congress in the 2014 General Election, reducing it to a mere 44 seats in a 543-member house, a historic low for the grand old party.
