Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who became the cinematic face of patriotism in India, passed away at the age of 87 in the early hours of April 4 at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. As the news of his demise spread, tributes began pouring in from across the country, including heartfelt condolences from the President of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and members of his family.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow in a post on ‘X,’ writing:
“Saddened by the demise of legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar Ji. He has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. During his long and distinguished career, he came to be known for his patriotic films, which promoted a sense of pride in India’s contribution and values. The iconic characters of national heroes, farmers, and soldiers he brought to life will remain etched in our collective memory. His cinema will instill national pride and inspire generations to come. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, calling Manoj Kumar a “true son of Bharat.” In his message, the Prime Minister said,
“Manoj Kumar Ji’s films ignited the flame of patriotism in the hearts of millions. His storytelling, dedication to the nation, and powerful screen presence made him a symbol of selfless love for the country. His contribution to cinema and culture will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and countless fans. Om Shanti.”
Manoj Kumar’s son, Kunal Goswami, shared an emotional statement with the media:
“My father passed away peacefully at 3:30 AM. He had been unwell for a long time but fought every challenge with strength and grace. With Sai Baba’s blessings and by God’s grace, he breathed his last peacefully. His cremation will take place tomorrow. Sia Ram.”
Television producer Manish R. Goswami, Manoj Kumar’s cousin, reflected on the loss of both a family member and a national icon.
He said, “This is a sad day for the entire country. The era of making patriotic films has come to an end today. This is the end of an era of a true Indian and true patriotism. What should I say about his life and the films he gave to Indian cinema? His contribution was immense. He lived for films, and his love for our country was always visible through his work.”
Affectionately called “Bharat Kumar,” Manoj Kumar’s name became synonymous with patriotic cinema through classics like ‘Shaheed,’ ‘Upkar,’ ‘Purab Aur Paschim,’ and ‘Kranti.’ Awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2016, he leaves behind a body of work that continues to inspire pride in India’s cultural and historical legacy.
