Mohanlal and Prithviraj’s L2: Empuraan beats Tovino Thomas’ 2018 to become second highest-grossing Malayalam film in India | Malayalam Movie News

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan has achieved a major box office milestone. Within just 10 days of its theatrical run, the film has collected an impressive Rs 94.65 crore in India, overtaking the lifetime domestic collection of Tovino Thomas’s 2018, which stood at Rs 92.5 crore. This feat cements L2: Empuraan as the second highest-grossing Malayalam film in Indian box office history. It has also become the highest grossing Malayalam film global as its collection crossed Rs 250 crore mark beating Manjummel Boys’ score of Rs 242 crore. But in India, Manjummel Boys is still the highest grossing Malayalam film with Rs 141.61 crore collection.

The sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, L2: Empuraan opened with a bang, earning Rs 21 crore on its first day across all languages, with Malayalam alone contributing Rs 18.6 crore. Despite a noticeable drop on Day 2 (Rs 11.1 crore), the film stabilized over the weekend and continued to draw audiences throughout its first week, wrapping up with Rs 88.25 crore in total.
The second weekend began on a slightly softer note, with Day 9 (second Friday) pulling in Rs 2.9 crore. However, the film showed resilience, recording an estimated Rs 3.5 crore on its second Saturday, thus pushing its total India net collection to Rs 94.65 crore.
Mohanlal’s commanding performance as Stephen Nedumpally, combined with Prithviraj’s sharp direction and massy storytelling, has clearly struck a chord with audiences. The film’s appeal extends beyond Kerala, with noticeable contributions from its dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.
By surpassing 2018—a survival drama based on the Kerala floods that was widely praised and commercially successful—L2: Empuraan has firmly established itself as a box office juggernaut.
Work on the third part has already begun with Mohanlal’s son Pranav being roped in to play the younger version of Stephen Nedumpally. The film has been titled as L3: The Beginning.
