The Supreme Court on Thursday (April 24, 2025) granted temporary bail to Vikas Yadav, former Minister D.P. Yadav’s son who is serving a 25-year prison sentence without remission in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, to attend to his ailing and hospitalised mother.
A Bench headed by Justice A.S. Oka allowed the temporary bail till May 8 while ordering Yadav’s mother to be shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical board to thoroughly ascertain her health status.
The board’s report would be submitted in court before May 7 and would be reviewed by the court the next day for passing further orders.
The apex court directed that Yadav, who has undergone 23 years of actual incarceration, would be confined to a residential address in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He would visit his mother only after she was shifted back to the private hospital from AIIMS after the medical check.
The Bench said Yadav would deposit a bail bond of ₹1 lakh and a surety. He would report to the police station in which jurisdiction his residential address was located.
The court warned that Yadav would not try to get in touch with the victim’s mother, Neelam Katara, the case’s prime witness, Ajay Katara, or any other prosecution witnesses while on temporary bail.
The Bench ordered the Delhi and Uttarakhand Police to provide Ms. Katara enhanced security. Ms. Katara has her home in Uttarakhand but visits the national capital.
Vikas was found guilty of the kidnapping and murder of Nitish Katara, a business executive, who was alleged to be having an affair with his sister, Bharti Yadav.
