“The UK is proud of its history of protecting those who are in need. A representative for the UK Home Office stated, “Yet, there is no provision for someone to travel to the UK specifically to seek asylum or temporary refuge.”
Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister who was overthrown, has reportedly had her visa canceled by the United States. This comes after rumors circulated that the US and other Western nations wanted her removed from office.
Hasina is presently at the Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, having resigned and fled to India amid violent protests in her native Bangladesh.
According to sources from the UK Home Office, people are not allowed to enter the country under British immigration procedures in order to apply for asylum or temporary refuge. This announcement coincides with persistent rumors that Sheikh Hasina, the deposed leader of Bangladesh who is currently in Delhi, may take a plane to London in search of safety.
Following Labour’s recent landslide victory, the UK government—now headed by Sir Keir Starmer—also emphasized that anyone seeking asylum must apply in the first secure nation they arrive in.
“The UK is proud of its history of protecting those who are in need. A representative for the UK Home Office stated, “Yet, there is no provision for someone to travel to the UK specifically to seek asylum or temporary refuge.”
“The quickest route to safety is for those who require international protection to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach,” the official continued.
However, reports suggest that an official request for asylum is currently being handled.
Sheikh Hasina was able to leave Dhaka on Monday thanks to military assistance, following weeks of mounting pressure from anti-government demonstrations against her reservation policy. In recent weeks, over 440 people have died as a result of the deadly disturbances that erupted from these protests. Protesters broke into her home shortly after she resigned, causing extensive damage.
Hasina was welcomed by senior military authorities and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval upon her arrival in India on Monday. They gave her the assurance that she would be safe. Rafale fighter planes were sent in to ensure her safe passage while the Indian Air Force kept an eye on her journey. The military has announced the establishment of an interim government headed by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, although the situation in Bangladesh is still unstable.
After her abrupt resignation, Hasina had called out to India for safe passage, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament on Tuesday. As to Jaishankar’s suo motu testimony in the Rajya Sabha, Hasina was given permission to visit India on “very short notice.”
Despite the curfew, protestors assembled in Dhaka on August 5. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appears to have decided to step down after meeting with representatives of the security establishment, Jaishankar said in Parliament. She quickly requested permission to travel to India for a little period of time. Bangladeshi officials immediately sent us a request for a flight clearance. She landed in Delhi this evening,” he continued.
