India will hold the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan “in abeyance with immediate effect”, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced on Wednesday (April 23, 2025). It is part of the five-pronged response that was decided upon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in the aftermath of the terror strike in Pahalgam that left 26 dead.
Sources in the Central government said Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are reaching out to the leaders of various political parties for the same.
The CCS decided to take several steps on the diplomatic front, including placing the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, and cancelling visas issued to Pakistani nationals.
