Upasana Konidela, wife of Ram Charan and granddaughter of Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, has been a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and financial independence. Recently she shared about managing her finances and building wealth on her own terms.
Upasana is the heir to a vast business empire valued at approximately Rs 77,000 crore. However, she shared that her lineage does not guarantee unlimited access to wealth.
During an interview with Masoom Minawala, she shared, “People think I come from a rich family, but I don’t have access to the kind of wealth that would require me to do the things that I want.” This realization made her take control of her finances in her late 30s, deciding to educate herself and make informed decisions about her wealth.
Her approach towards wealth
Traditionally, many people, especially in close-knit family systems, rely on elders for financial planning. However, Upasana desired a more hands-on approach. She defined her goals and the wealth needed to achieve them, leading her to restructure her company. This taught her the importance of financial literacy and confidence. “I needed to understand how my business could run better and how I could grow my wealth to align with my vision. It was important to stop relying solely on others and instead empower myself with the right tools and insights,” she explained.
Empowering women through financial education
Upasana strongly believes that financial literacy is a key skill for women, particularly those set to inherit family wealth. She said, “Yes, it may be inherited, but you must know how to manage it. Even that is a class you must take.” Without this knowledge, managing large sums can be detrimental. “It gives you the confidence to use that money wisely,” she noted.
Upasana’s family uses a structured “family constitution” to avoid conflicts over wealth, ensuring harmony in their business and personal relationships. Married to Ram Charan, she acknowledges the challenges of marriage but credits her husband with teaching her patience. As they raise their daughter, Klin Kara Konidela, Upasana balances family, business, and self-growth with determination.
Inspiring note on International Women’s Day
Earlier on International Women’s Day, the entrepreneur urged women to pursue financial independence. On X (formerly Twitter), she asked women to consider how financial independence could change their lives. She said, “Financial independence isn’t just about earning money—it’s about having the power to make choices.” She also wrote, “What if you never had to ask for money? What if your choices were truly yours? Financial independence isn’t just about earning. It’s about having control over your life, your dreams, and your future.”
