BJP on Wednesday chose its Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta as Delhi Chief Minister with its New Delhi MLA Parvesh Verma as her deputy.
She won from Shalimar Bagh, defeating AAP candidate Bandna Kumari by over 29,000 votes in the February 5 assembly election.
She was chosen as the Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly at the BJP legislature party meeting. The party has returned to power in Delhi after over 26 years.
Gupta and her Cabinet ministers will take the oath of office at the Ramlila Ground tomorrow. She will be the fourth woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi.
Earlier, excitement filled the air at the Delhi BJP office as party workers eagerly awaited the announcement of the new chief minister of Delhi. Just hours before the decision, the office premises were abuzz with jubilant party cadre, dancing to drumbeats and shouting slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘PM Modi, zindabad’.
Party workers expressed their readiness to accept any MLA as the new CM, stating that their celebrations were not limited to one particular candidate, but reflected their enthusiasm for the party’s success.
Devender Kohli, a party worker, said, “It doesn’t matter who becomes the CM as every MLA will ensure that the Prime Minister’s promises are kept.”
Smita Mohan, another party worker, said, “It would be great if the CM is a woman, but we will welcome any party leader at the top post.”
