Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan recently opened up about his relationship with his son, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Reflecting on the challenges and warmth in their bond, Salim shared that while he has scolded all his children, Salman has faced the most from him—mainly because he’s the eldest.
‘Salman had it the worst from me’
Speaking to Magic Moments, Salim revealed that Salman once remarked how his habits resembled his father’s. Salim responded with a touch of honesty and humour, “Son, it may be a compliment for you, but not for me. Please understand that I don’t wish you to inherit any of my habits.”
Wanted to be a friend, not a feared father
He went on to talk about how he tried to be a different kind of father than his own. Recalling the fear he felt as a child, Salim said he used to panic just hearing the sound of his father’s leather boots on the floor. Unlike that, he always wanted his own children to feel like they could be friends with him.

Long silent spells after clashes
Despite their close bond, there have been rough patches too. Salim admitted there were times he didn’t speak to Salman for extended periods. If Salman did something he disapproved of, Salim would keep his distance for six months at a stretch. “Yes, that has happened,” he said, noting that when he was angry, Salman would sometimes sneak out of the house to avoid confrontation, only to return later and apologise, admitting his mistake.

Salim also reflected on how success can sometimes cloud one’s growth as a person. “When a cricket player achieves greatness, they only focus on their game and nothing else,” he observed, implying that staying grounded and evolving as a human being is just as important as professional success.
