At a time when the nation is reeling in shock over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, an old interview of Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan has resurfaced online. In the viral clip from a throwback interview, Khan speaks candidly about the dangers of attaching religious or national labels to acts of extremism and terrorism, urging the people to resist the urge to generalise or stereotype entire communities.
The resurfaced clip comes in the wake of the Pahalgam incident, where a little-known militant group called The Resistance Front claimed responsibility for the attack. The tragedy which has sparked global outrage, has netizens embroiled in heated discussions online, calling for justice and an end to terrorism.
Amidst the discussions on the attack, a handle posted SRK’s old video with the caption, “What he said here is very relevant now more than ever.”
In the clip, when asked how it felt, as a Muslim, to see acts of terror linked to his religion, Khan responded, “I have never really thought of an extremist as guiding any other tag to them — a Jewish extremist or an English extremist or an American extremist or a Hindu extremist or a Muslim extremist. An extremist is an extremist.”
He went on to explain, “As soon as we start putting a tag to it is when we are actually inviting trouble — inviting trouble in the hearts and the minds of the world.”
He further elaborated on how both positive and negative associations can shape perceptions of people and even an entire country. Citing an example of his favourite tennis star Boris Becker, Khan said, “Why don’t we say, ‘the German tennis player’? I start assuming Germany has great tennis players. But when you say, ‘the German killer’ or ‘the Indian rapist’, it labels a country or a group, which is wrong.”
Calling for deeper understanding, he said, “The word that comes to my mind when I think of attacks like this, or any aggression of this order, anywhere in the world, by any kind of extremist — futility. It is so futile.”
Shah Rukh on Wednesday took to his social media handle to condemn the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir and called it an “inhumane act of violence” He wrote in a tweet, “Words fail to express the sadness and anger at the treachery and inhumane act of violence that has occurred in Pahalgam. In times like these, one can only turn to God and say a prayer for the families that suffered and express my deepest condolences. May we as a Nation, stand united, strong and get justice against this heinous act.”
Terrorists targeted a prime tourist location, reportedly killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists. It is the worst attack in Kashmir since the Pulwama strike in 2019 when 40 CRPF personnel were killed.
