Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri has given his take on whether the India captain Rohit Sharma should change his batting position in the Adelaide Test. Notably, Rohit is making a return to the team after missing the first Test due to the birth of his child which leaves India in a fix.
KL Rahul who opened in Rohit’s absence in the first Test in Perth made full use of the opportunity by scoring a brilliant 77. However, the return of Rohit Sharma means he could be well be pushed down the order to accommodate the India captain in the team. Ravi Shastri has also shared his thoughts on team India’s batting line up and said that irrespective of where Rohit bats in during the second Test, he’s a massive boost to the Indian side.
“It’s a fantastic boost because there’s no doubting his quality. He’s very experienced. You need that experience in the middle order. It’s the right mix of experience and youth in the setup, so whether he opens the batting or goes in the middle order, the choice is his. He’s experienced enough to see where he’s most dangerous when it comes to Australia,” Shastri said on the ICC Review.
Further speaking ahead, Shastri said that Rahul should continue to open the innings as Rohit hasn’t had much time in Australia.
“Where would Australia not like to see him? That’s the position he should choose. And he’s the leader of the pack, so he can afford to do that. I think he (Rahul) should carry on (opening) because Rohit has not had much time since he’s come here (Australia). Very quickly he had to play that Prime Minister’s XI game. But I would say carry on with the same setup. He [Rohit] can bat at five or six,” he added.
Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply in warm up game
Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply during India’s pink ball warm up fixture against Prime Minister’s XI. Rohit sacrificed his opening spot for KL Rahul who did a phenomenal job as an opener in the first Test in Perth. The India captain was very watchful at the crease as he respected the swinging conditions under lights. However, he couldn’t survive more than 11 deliveries and got dismissed for 3 (11) edging Charlie Anderson to wicketkeeper Oliver Davies.
Recently, commenting on his batting position ahead of the Adelaide Test, Rahul said that he does not mind batting in any position in the Indian team, as long as he gets to play in the first XI. It will be interesting to see what the team management decides with regards to Rahul’s batting position in Adelaide.
