The Solidarity Youth Movement and the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) jointly took out a march to Calicut International Airport at Karipur on Wednesday evening in protest against the Waqf Amendment Act.

Police blocked the protestors and resorted to a lathicharge and water cannon as they shouted that Waqf Act was genocidal. The organisers claimed several were injured in the police action.

Police arrested and removed the State leaders as the protestors sat and blocked the road. Those arrested were Solidarity State president Thoufeek Mampad, SIO State president Abdul Wahid, Solidarity State secretary Aneesh Mullassery, district president Sabiq Vettam, SIO State secretaries Arfad Ali and Asnah Tanur and district council member Mohammed Shafi.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board member and Jamat-e-Islami national vice president Malik Mohtasim Khan inaugurated the march. He described the Waqf Amendment Act as an aggression on religious freedom and constitutional rights in the country.

Delivering the keynote address, Christian Institute for the Study of Religion and Society (CSIRS) director Fr. Y.T. Vinayaraj asked the Church leadership to reconsider its stand on the Waqf issue. “You should rethink if the country’s Sangh Parivar politics has to be studied from the point of view of Munambam issue,” he said, calling upon the Christian community to understand the bedevilled plans of the Sangh Parivar to divide and gain.

Welfare Party of India national vice president Abdul Hameed Vaniyambalam, Ernakulam Congress district vice president Jinto John, social worker K. Ambujakshan, Solidarity Youth Movement State president Thoufeek Mampad, general secretary T. Ismail, SIO State president Abdul Wahid and general secretary Sahal Bas spoke.
