After Champions Trophy snub, Yashasvi Jaiswal to play Ranji Trophy semifinal-OxBig News Network

After missing out on a place in the Champions Trophy squad, star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Vidarbha in Nagpur. Jaiswal has been drafted into the Mumbai squad, led by Ajinkya Rahane, for the semi-final starting on February 17.

Jaiswal was initially set to miss the Ranji Trophy knockout matches after earning a spot in India’s preliminary Champions Trophy squad. He made his ODI debut earlier in February in the first match of the recently concluded three-match series against England but was benched for the final two games.

On Tuesday, Jaiswal was dropped from India’s final 15-man Champions Trophy squad to accommodate an extra spinner, Varun Chakravarthy. However, he was named in a three-member team of non-travelling substitutes for the tournament, meaning he will travel to Dubai only if needed.

Mumbai also included all-rounder Shivam Dube, who is part of the same three-man non-travelling reserve for the Champions Trophy, in their semi-final squad. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also retains his place in the team.

Jaiswal previously featured in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir in January, alongside Rohit Sharma. However, he failed in both innings as Jammu and Kashmir pulled off a shock win against the defending champions.

The young opener will be eager to deliver a stronger performance, provided he makes the playing XI for the semi-final, which is a repeat of last year’s final.

Mumbai reached the semi-final after securing a sensational come-from-behind victory over Haryana in the quarterfinal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Captain Ajinkya Rahane led from the front with a match-winning century in the second innings, while Suryakumar Yadav contributed with a quick-fire 70. Shardul Thakur was outstanding with the ball, picking up nine wickets, including a six-wicket haul in the first innings.
