Australian captain Pat Cummins has backed vice captain Steve Smith to rediscover his form ahead of the third Test against India, which begins in Brisbane on December 14. Smith has endured a lean patch with the bat, with his last century dating back to the Ashes series at Lord’s in 2023. The Australian vice captain’s recent struggles include a top score of just 17 in his last six Test innings.

Smith has averaged 23.20 in seven Tests with only one half-century in 2024, marking a significant dip in his overall career average, now at 56.09—its lowest since 2015. Comparisons have been drawn between Smith’s current series against India and the 2020–21 series in Australia, where he started with scores of 1, 0, and 8 before eventually regaining his rhythm. Despite improved performances in the latter half of that series, Australia failed to secure victory.

Cummins, however, remains optimistic about Smith’s resurgence. “You look at his record, stats would suggest (runs) are not far around the corner,” Cummins said.

“In particular this year, he’s looking fantastic in the nets, just looking really sharp, looking like he’s got plenty of time. doing all the right things like he always does.

“He got caught down the leg side last game. I don’t know if you can look into that too much, so I’m sure a big score’s just around the corner.”

With the series tied at 1-1 and three matches remaining, Cummins underscored the significance of dominating at home, particularly in the context of the World Test Championship.

“Winning in Australia is a matter of pride,” Cummins stated. “These are our home conditions, and we’ve grown up playing here. To succeed in the World Test Championship, you need to win all your home series and capitalise on opportunities abroad. That’s the standard we’ve set for ourselves.”

Smith’s struggles, particularly against India’s disciplined pace attack, have sparked scrutiny of his defensive technique. Nevertheless, the star batsman is determined to turn things around. He has been refining his approach in the nets, analyzing the methods of other batsmen who have thrived in testing conditions, and striving to strike the right balance in his batting technique.
