Xabi Alonso has announced that he will be leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, amidst speculation of a move to Real Madrid to take over from Carlo Ancelotti. Alonso, who guided Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title last season, revealed the decision during a press conference on Friday, May 9.

The former Spain midfielder will leave Leverkusen after three years. Speaking at the press conference, as quoted by ESPN, Alonso said that he came to an agreement with the club that the last two games of the season will be his final ones and claimed it was the right moment for him to announce his exit.

The Spaniard said he had a word with the players and staff and it was a moment filled with mixed emotions for him.

“This week, the club and I have agreed that these last two games are going to be my last as Leverkusen coach,” Alonso, 43, said. “Now is the right moment to announce it.

“We want to have a proper farewell on Sunday. This morning I have talked with players and staff. For sure it is a moment with mixed emotions.

“I have to be thankful for everyone — from the fans, the people in the club and for sure the players. We can be happy and we can be proud of what we have achieved. We are taking the club in the right direction.”

Alonso leaves with a long-lasting legacy

Alonso will leave his post at Leverkusen with a long-lasting legacy as he took over when the club was in the relegation zone in October 2022. He guided Leverkusen to a domestic double the following season, with his side going unbeaten throughout the season on their way to the Bundesliga title.

He guided Leverkusen to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga this season and is expected to be the new coach at Real Madrid, once Carlo Ancelotti’s exit is confirmed.
