Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open 2025 title after stunning world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a classic men’s singles final in five sets on Sunday. Alcaraz became just the ninth player to rally from two sets down and win a Grand Slam final in the Open Era.
The 22-year-old Sinner showed extraordinary fight to register 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-2) win over Sinner after five hours and 29 minutes – the longest French Open final in history.
Trailing 3-5, 0/40 in the fourth set, Alcaraz saved three championship points before storming back to level the match. After failing to serve out the contest at 5-4 in the fifth, he regrouped and dominated the match tiebreak, sealing the win under immense pressure.
Alcaraz, who produced the finest performance of his career, is the first man to win a Grand Slam title after saving the match point since Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in the 2019 Wimbledon final.
The victory gives Alcaraz his second Roland Garros title and fifth major overall, maintaining a perfect 5–0 record in Slam finals. He also became just the third man this century – after Gustavo Kuerten and Rafael Nadal – to successfully defend a French Open crown.

At 22 years and 34 days old, Alcaraz also became the third-youngest man to win five Grand Slam titles in history. He only trails Bjorn Borg (22 years, 5 days) and Rafael Nadal (22 years, 33 days).
Alcaraz won his first major crown at the 2022 US Open as a 19-year-old, and he has now claimed at least one Slam in four consecutive seasons. The 22-year-old became the eighth man in the Open Era to successfully defend the Roland Garros title.
Alcaraz now leads the ATP Head-to-Head series against Sinner 8-4 and extends his season win tally to a Tour-leading 37. With this win, he became the first player born in the 2000s to claim 20 tour-level titles.
Despite the loss, Sinner retains his position atop the ATP Rankings with a healthy lead of 2,030 points.
