Star India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has opened up on his relationship with the new India captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Speaking to Sky Sports in an interview, Bumrah revealed that he had rejected BCCI’s offer to become the full-time Test captain of the Indian team, a position that was later given to Gill.

Bumrah said that he had a great relationship with Shubman Gill and was always open to giving ideas if the captain needed them. Bumrah argued that captains need their space and that he, as a senior, should let Shubman flourish instead of going into his ear too much.

“In my experience, you have to give freedom and you have to be there for the player. I am there for him whenever he needs me, in whatever capacity. I don’t want to jump in, and if I see something, I would give a quiet word. That’s how I have played cricket. I want the person to be free about how he wants to operate. He is young and energetic, he has his own thought process, and that is how it should be,” Jasprit Bumrah told Dinesh Karthik in a Sky Sports interview.

“If he needs anything from me, I will always be there for him,” he added.

Bumrah said that head coach Gautam Gambhir had a lot to figure out in India’s transition period in the Test team. Bumrah said that the Indian side touring England is completely different, and the coaching personnel will need to be calm and patient to navigate these tough two months in the 5-match series.

Gambhir Needs to be Patient: Bumrah

Bumrah opened up on Gautam Gambhir’s style of coaching and said that it was very individualistic in nature, where the coach went to each player and imparted ideas instead of speaking in a group.

“He is a person who is very individualistic. He will have one-on-one chats with the person where he feels that he is supposed to interfere. You know, when people are going in one direction and he has some thoughts about that. I think he is handling an interesting phase in Indian cricket. Two tours ago, our team was completely different, and right now it is heading towards a transition. They will now require a lot more patience and a lot more calm with the young players. He is very calm in his approach, and the players are nice and happy,” Bumrah concluded.
