Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name in the history books after recording the highest score by an Indian opener in Test matches at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The southpaw reached the landmark on Day 1 of the second Test as India are looking to bounce back from their five-wicket defeat at Headingley in Leeds.

Jaiswal broke the record of Sudhir Naik, who scored 77 runs off 165 balls against Mike Denness’ England back in July 1974. On Wednesday, July 2, the 23-year-old scored 87 runs off 107 balls with the help of 13 fours before England captain Ben Stokes accounted for his wicket in the post-lunch session.

Jaiswal also had the chance of becoming the fastest Indian to the landmark of 2000 runs in Test cricket, but he fell short. But he still has the chance of equalling the record if he scores 10 runs in the second innings. The record is currently being jointly held by Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid, who both got there in 40 innings.

Jaiswal showcased solid form in the first Test, crafting a stylish 101 off 159 deliveries. His knock, laced with 16 boundaries and a six, came to an end at the hands of opposition captain Ben Stokes.

However, his momentum didn’t carry into the second innings, where he was dismissed for just 4 runs off 11 balls by Brydon Carse.
