India head coach Gautam Gambhir is being slammed for his comments on Rishabh Pant’s twin centuries in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Pant etched his name in the history books as he became just the second wicketkeeper batter in the history of Tests to score centuries in each innings of a match after Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower.

He also became the seventh Indian batter to achieve the feat and first to do so in England. However, Pant’s efforts ended in vain as India lost the Test by five wickets. In the post-match press conference, Gautam Gambhir was asked to share his thoughts on Pant’s heroic efforts. However, the India head coach was left annoyed by a journalist’s question, saying that he should’ve also mentioned the other centurions of the match.

“There are 3 more centuries as well, those are big positives too. Thank you, I would have liked it if you would have said that 100 from Yashasvi, 100 from Shubman on debut as captain, 100 from KL, and 2 centuries from Rishabh. So, 5 centuries in a test match. It’s a great start to be honest and hopefully the question could have been better,” said Gambhir in the post-match press conference.

Gambhir’s comments didn’t go down well with fans on social media, who launched a scathing attack on the former India cricketer. Pant got involved in crucial partnerships in both innings, first with Shubman Gill and later with KL Rahul. He added 209 runs for the fourth wicket with Gill in the first innings, playing an innings of 134 (178), with the help of 12 fours and six sixes.

During his innings, he also left behind legendary MS Dhoni, registering the most centuries by an India wicketkeeper in Tests. Later in the second innings, Pant added 195 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul, with his innings of 118 (140), studded with 15 fours and three sixes.

Unfortunately, Pant’s career-best performance ended up in a losing cause as England chased down a massive score of 371 in the fourth innings to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
