The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing council has come up with a new set of rules for the upcoming season of the tournament. The captains of all ten franchises met in Mumbai ahead of the upcoming edition where several rules were amended to add to the excitement of the T20 extravaganza.
In its 18th season, IPL has continued to evolve like no other T20 league in the world, which makes it the most enthralling tournament in the world. As another season of India’s own festival is upon is on the horizon, here’s a complete guide to the new rules and regulations for IPL 2025:
1. Lifting the ban on use of saliva
In IPL 2025, bowlers will be allowed to shine the ball using saliva, a practice which was banned post the Covid-19 pandemic. The move has been made to allow the bowlers to get some assistance through reverse swing after they were smashed all over the park in the previous season. As a result, IPL has become the first tournament to uplift the saliva ban in the post-Covid era.

2. Use of two balls to counter dew
Over the years, several games have been affected in IPL history due to dew as bowlers find it tough to grip a wet ball under lights. To counter this, captains will be allowed to opt for a ball change after the tenth over of the second innings during the evening matches. The bowling team will be provided with a ball of similar condition, and it will also be up to the umpire’s discretion to allow the ball change.
3. No match bans for over-rate offences
Starting from IPL 2025, captains will not face bans for slow overrate offences but will get demerit points. A Level 1 offence will lead to a deduction of 25 to 75 percent match fees with demerit points which will be accumulated for three years. A level 2 offence will attract four demerit points.
Furthermore, for every four demerit points, the match referee can impose a penalty, which can be up to 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. The demerit points can lead to match bans, but not for slow over-rate offences.
4. New technology to be used for wides and no balls
If a player uses the DRS for reviewing on-field wide and no-ball calls, Hawk-Eye and ball-tracking technology will be used to assist the umpires in making accurate decisions. The IPL governing council came up with the use of DRS technology for both WPL (Women’s Premier League) and the IPL in 2023, becoming the first tournament in the world to do so.
