Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo were on the scoresheet as Liverpool outclassed Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, December 1. This meant that City’s windless run stretched to 7 games as they suffered their 6th loss during the same time period. Liverpool would extend their lead to City to 11 points as the Reds were dominant against Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool were on the front foot from the get-go as they had City on the ropes and could have easily scored 3 or 4 goals as there was relentless pressure from Arne Slot’s side. A big moment came in the 4th minute when Luis Diaz pulled off a good swivel to send Cody Gakpo away. Ortega was able to pull off a good save, but the flag had gone up for offside by that time.
Ortega was called into action yet again as Szoboszlai’s weak shot was stopped after some sloppy play from Manuel Akanji in the build-up to the move. City would have the post to thank in the 12th minute as Virgil van Dijk’s effort would rebound off the woodwork. However, the relief was short-lived as Mohamed Salah would put in a fine pass to Gakpo, who bundled the ball home shortly after.

Van Dijk had another golden chance in the 19th minute from another corner as City were struggling to hold on. Gakpo would have a chance soon after as Liverpool threatened to run away from the game. City were able to slowly get into the game, but Liverpool continued to dominate the game.
Liverpool had the biggest chance in the 56th minute to make it 2-0 as Bernardo Silva’s poor pass let Salah go on a run towards Ortega. However, the shot from the Egyptian went well over.
City’s best attempts at trying to apply pressure on goal would see the hosts launch continuous attacks. One such move saw Salah and Alexander-Arnold almost make it 2-0 but an offside flag was raised.
The mistakes continued to be evident in City’s game as Dias and Walker would give the ball away, and it forced Ortega to pull down Luis Diaz in the box. Salah would convert from the spot to more or less seal the points for the Reds.
A mistake from Van Dijk almost had De Bruyne reduce the deficit, but Kelleher was on hand to pull off a fine stop. Liverpool would extend their lead at the top of the table to 9 points, ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea. For Guardiola, he would need to regroup as City face Nottingham Forest next at home on December 4 while Liverpool face Newcastle United away from home.
