Jasprit Bumrah returned to his very best on Sunday, April 27, as Mumbai Indians continued their incredible march towards the Indian Premier League playoffs. The Hardik Pandya-led team hammered Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, with a special performance from Bumrah, who returned to his thinking best.

Defending 215 runs, Bumrah wiped out the entire lower middle order of Lucknow in a single over, handing MI a sensational win by 54 runs. Bowling in his return spell in the 15th over, Bumrah picked up the wickets of David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Khan in the space of 5 balls.

The three deliveries that Bumrah took wickets with showed clear signs of how the fast bowler was progressing after his comeback from injury sustained in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Bumrah bowled a rank full toss to David Miller, who has been underconfident throughout the season. Miller was unable to get the ball away and deposited a high catch to Corbin Bosch standing at midwicket.

The next wicket—of Abdul Samad—was even better. A slower, dipping yorker that didn’t exactly hit the length. It was very full, but Samad ended up making a mess of it, hitting his bat into the ground and missing the line of the ball, which then crashed into the stumps.

The third wicket in the same over was a pitch-perfect delivery, full and fast to Avesh Khan, giving the tailender absolutely no chance to defend the ball.

LSG, who were still in the fight with 140 runs on the board for the loss of 5 wickets in the 15th over, were reduced to 142/8 in the 16th over of the match.

From there, it was simply a matter of time before LSG crashed and burned, and they ended up getting bowled out for 161 runs in 20 overs.

LSG CONTINUE SAME STORY

The story for LSG has been the same throughout the season. Either their top order—comprising Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, and Nicholas Pooran—fires, or the team collapses like a pack of cards.

The middle order, made up of Rishabh Pant, David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Ayush Badoni, has failed game after game, and the story was fairly similar on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium. Not a single batter from the LSG side was able to play a match-defining innings. Mitchell Marsh (34 off 24), Nicholas Pooran (27 off 15), David Miller (24 off 16), and Ayush Badoni (35 off 22) all got starts, but none of them could convert those into match-winning knocks.

Only two LSG batters scored in single digits on Sunday—Rishabh Pant and Abdul Samad, who scored 4 and 2 respectively.

Rishabh Pant’s batting position is turning out to be a massive puzzle for LSG, who simply have not figured out where to bat their captain—a player around whom the entire team is built. After batting at No.7 against DC, Pant came out to bat at No.4 today, hoping to stabilise the batting order after the dismissals of Aiden Markram (9 off 11) and Nicholas Pooran. However, he was dismissed by part-time off-spinner Will Jacks on a track that didn’t turn much at all.

Pant’s continued failures pose massive challenges for LSG, who have probably punched above their weight this season. Despite an injury-stricken squad, LSG managed to win 5 games in the first half of their campaign, but now, their tournament is finally starting to unravel.
