Ranji Trophy: After Rohit Sharma horror, bowlers keep Mumbai alive vs Jammu and Kashmir-OxBig News Network

Mumbai bowlers rescued their team on Day 1 of the 6th round of the Ranji Trophy on Thursday, January 23. Playing against Jammu and Kashmir, Shams Mulani and Mohit Avasthi kept the hosts afloat against Jammu and Kashmir, who put up a spirited fight against the defending champions at the BKC Ground.

Despite heavyweights Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal being shoehorned into the side, Mumbai’s batting collapsed as the side were bowled out for just 120 runs in the first innings of the match. It could have been much worse for Mumbai if it were not for Shardul Thakur’s heroic half-century, which helped Mumbai reach 120 runs after being reduced to 47/7 inside the first 20 overs of the match.

Ranji Trophy: Superstars fail

India captain Rohit Sharma, who had joined the side hoping to revive his form, did not look comfortable at all during his stay and got out trying to gingerly play a pull shot in the 6th over of the match. Jaiswal’s stay also lasted just 8 balls, and both openers walked back inside the first 10 overs of the match.

Mumbai’s strong batting line-up, which included the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, and Shreyas Iyer, failed to provide any resistance on the BKC pitch. The team was bowled out for 120 runs in just 33.2 overs on Day 1 of the game.

In return, Mumbai had a torrid start with the ball as well, after Jammu and Kashmir opener Shubham Khajuria held one end of the innings, helping the side reach 100 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. However, Shardul Thakur and Shams Mulani hit back after the Tea break with quick wickets to reduce the visiting side to 174/7 at the end of Day 1’s play.

Mohit Avasthi, who had picked up the first wicket for Vivrant Sharma in the innings, struck back with two more wickets late in the day, rattling the Jammu and Kashmir middle-order.

At the end of the day’s play, Jammu and Kashmir captain Paras Dogra (19*) was at the crease alongside fast bowler Yudhvir Singh Charak (2*), leading Mumbai by 54 runs.
