Shreyas Iyer didn’t get credit for KKR’s IPL win, it all went somewhere else: Gavaskar-OxBig News Network

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has once again asserted that Shreyas Iyer didn’t get enough credit for leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL triumph in 2024 and all the credit went ‘somewhere else’. Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024, leading his team from the front as he scored 351 runs from 14 innings at an average of 39 and with two fifties.

Despite a successful season at KKR, Iyer wasn’t retained by the franchise and was later sold to Punjab Kings in the mega auction for a whopping Rs 26.75 Crore. He’s enjoying another magnificent season in Punjab, who’re looking in top form under his leadership. Recently, Gavaskar praised Iyer’s leadership skills, mentioning his KKR success and said that despite his tactful decisions on the field, all the credit went ‘somewhere else’.

“He didn’t get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It’s the captain, who plays a major role in what’s happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Iyer is in the middle of another great season, having led Punjab Kings in seven victories out of 11 matches. PBKS are currently sitting third on the points table with 15 points from 11 matches. Iyer has also continued his rich form from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, having accumulated 405 runs from 11 innings at an average of 50.62 with four fifties to his name.

His rich form, coupled with astute leadership, has been one of the strongest pillars of Punjab’s success. Meanwhile, Punjab Kings have a golden chance to climb to the top of the points table with a win in the upcoming fixture against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur. However, they will be up against their historical record, having won just one out of the six matches so far.
