Shubman Gill will be a mix of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as captain: Jos Buttler-OxBig News Network

England batter Jos Buttler feels that India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill will be a perfect mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill has been appointed as India’s Test captain, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. The 25-year-old will be leading the team for the first time in the longest format in the upcoming series against England, set to begin from June 20.

Ahead of Gill’s first Test as captain, Buttler, who played under him in Gujarat Titans (GT) during the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025), shared insights about his captaincy, mentioning that he’s a mature man.

“Yeah, there’s a lot of buzz around this series. The IPL just finished, but even during that, there was huge interest in who’d become India’s next captain. Shubman Gill is now leading the side. He was my captain at Gujarat Titans—an impressive player and a really mature young man,” said Buttler in a podcast with Stuart Broad.

He also revealed that Gill possesses qualities of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as a leader and will be a perfect mix of both.

“He’s calm and measured when he speaks. But on the field, he has fight and intensity. He’s passionate. I think he’ll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. Kohli brought aggression and in-your-face competitiveness, while Rohit is more laid-back—cool, calm, and collected. Shubman feels like he’s somewhere in between. He’s learned from both, but he’s also his own man,” he added.

Gill has led India in five T20Is so far, during the tour of Zimbabwe in 2024. However, he doesn’t have any experience of leading in Tests. He has played 32 Test matches in his career so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties to his name.

However, he doesn’t have a memorable record away from India, having scored just 88 runs from three Tests played in England with the highest score of 28. Hence, the new captain has a massive task to turn his fortunes in the upcoming tour.
