Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar praised newly-appointed Indian Test captain Shubman Gill for making measured and well-thought-out decisions. After taking over from Rohit Sharma, Gill had a tough start to his captaincy career, with India losing the opening Test to Ben Stokes’ England by five wickets at Headingley in Leeds.

However, the 25-year-old didn’t let the setback rattle him. Instead of retreating into his shell, Gill responded in style, leading India to a commanding 336-run victory in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham – leveling the five-match series. Tendulkar noted that Gill remained calm and composed throughout, as India secured their first-ever Test win in Birmingham since 1967.

“He’s been excellent – very calm and composed. I strongly believe that the rest of the ten players respond to his decisions and leadership. The choices he’s made have been measured and well thought out,” Tendulkar told Star Sports.

‘Shubman Gill has been remarkable’

Gill has also been outstanding with the bat, registering scores of 147, 269, and 161. His tally of 430 runs at Edgbaston stands as the highest ever by an Indian batter in a single Test match – an incredible achievement that underscores his dominance and composure at the crease.

“His batting complements his captaincy as well. When a captain is in good form, it positively impacts decision-making. You need to be in the right frame of mind to make crucial calls, and he’s clearly there. He’s been batting brilliantly,” Tendulkar said.

“As the opposition, you’d normally try to target weaknesses in a batter’s technique, but right now, he’s been remarkable. What I’ve seen from him has been special,” Tendulkar added.

Following his phenomenal performance in Birmingham, Gill will be eager to lead India to a 2-1 advantage in the series. In just three matches so far, he has amassed 585 runs at an astonishing average of 146.25 and a strike rate of 73.86 – further cementing his stature as a rising force in Test cricket.
