After two weeks of riveting action, it’s time for the ultimate showdown at the US Open 2024. On Saturday, September 7, Aryna Sabelanka and Jessica Pegula will face off in the final of the women’s singles at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Pegula will be playing in her first final of a major while Sabalenka has a chance to win her third Grand Slam and her first at Flushing Meadows.
Last year, Sabalenka became the world No.1 at the hard court major, but she lost to Coco Gauff in the final despite taking the first set. Barring the match against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round where she went a set down, the Belarusian has looked more or less at ease.
Sabalenka, however, had to work hard against Emma Navarro, who earlier showed defending champion Gauff the door of elimination. Sabalenka dropped her serve a couple of times against Navarro before putting her best foot forward in the tie-break where she won seven points in a row.
Pegula, on the other hand, will be brimming with confidence given her performance against World No.1 Iga Swiatek and Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova. The American star pulled off a massive upset after taking down Swiatek, the 2022 champion, in straight sets.
In the semis against Muchova, Pegula looked in all sorts of trouble after losing the first set and then dropping her serve early in the second. But then she turned her fortunes to get the better of Muchova, who was impressive throughout the tournament.
